Viewing & Collecting

A guide to approaching the work

A little context for moving from an image on a screen to the artwork, its writing, and its provenance.

Begin with a work

Open an artwork, spend time with the image, then read its artist notes. The inscription link identifies the work on Bitcoin; a gallery thumbnail is a preview.

Viewing and display

Many works include a way to save a high-resolution image. Open the work’s original Ordinals content link, click inside the artwork to give it keyboard focus, then press S when that work supports the shortcut.

For some newer works, clicking or tapping the artwork reveals a download button. On a phone, look for that button; if the work only supports the keyboard shortcut, open its original content link on a computer with a keyboard.

The controls and export size vary by work, so follow the instructions in its original viewer. Use the exported image rather than a gallery thumbnail for display, and preserve its intended proportions.

WorkHow to approach it
Static imagesUse the original image or the work’s own download function when available. Preserve the intended proportions when displaying it.
HTML and generative worksOpen the work’s original viewer. Controls differ between works and versions; consult its own instructions.
Paint engineGenerating an output is an interaction with the engine. It does not create a new Bitcoin inscription.
BEST BEFOREIts visible state and lifespan depend on activation and block time. A saved still does not reproduce the live work’s behavior.

An example from Montreal

Go to the official ordinals content link of this inscription and double click to rotate or press 'S' on your keyboard to download the 1800x3200 high resolution PNG

Historical per-work instructions. Check the original viewer for current behavior.

Originals, editions, and collection parents

Read the individual work’s details. A collection parent links a family of inscriptions; it should be identified clearly alongside the individual works. The Montreal preview includes De Sève as its collection parent.

Edition size, file format, and presentation can differ by series. For a specific work or proposed display, ask about that work directly.

Inquire about a work

Send the title or inscription link and a short description of what you have in mind—collecting, a display, or an exhibition.
