Between chapters
Liminality began after the BEST BEFORE release, when I realized that making a living from my art might become a much longer road than I had hoped. I had to think about what came next: finding work, accepting that 2023, 2024, and 2025 had been a beautiful ride, and understanding that it might not continue in the same way.
That in-between state stayed with me and simmered. Then, in January, My Love told me I was going to be a father. Returning to Canada, my home country, after five years away in Mexico and Asia became another part of that transition.
Liminality grew within this period of uncertainty and change: between ways of making a living, between countries, and between the life I had known and the responsibilities ahead.
The threshold
In anthropology, liminality (from Latin limen ‘threshold’) is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of a rite of passage, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the rite is complete. During a rite’s liminal stage, participants ‘stand at the threshold’ between their previous way of structuring their identity, time, or community, and a new way (which completing the rite establishes). A connection to BEST BEFORE
The BEST BEFORE diary follows the tension between pride in the work and the financial pressure around its release. That uncertainty became part of the transition explored in Liminality.
Read the BEST BEFORE diary →L: September 20, 2025 - 22:13 PM I kinda feel bad for O. He woke up today feeling happy and excited for it all - and don't get me wrong - I feel exactly the same about the work. I'm really proud of what we did. But this time, despite what I said - the financials are more important than they ever were before. I've set myself a threshold for the target raise of this release and it's nowhere near - not even close. At least now I really know what the market think I'm worth...
